The video above is a performance from the 2007 incarnation of Joe Satriani’s G3 tour, where Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert and John Petrucci (arguably three of the best modern guitar players in the world) lend their skills to a Jimi Hendrix classic, “Purple Haze”. Check out other performances from the G3 2007 tour, including another Hendrix cover, “Voodoo Chile”. Also check after the jump for the G3 version of the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin Jack Flash”.

My personal highlights from this performance include: the incredible interchange of solos between three guitarists who are obviously enjoying themselves; the section (5mins 30secs) when Paul Gilbert plays a solo using his infamous modified drill; Gilbert then looks on in amazement as Satriani rips a solo by muting the first fret with his picking hand and hammering all the notes without picking a string. Finally, determined not to be outdone Gilbert then lays his guitar on the floor and plays it like it a keyboard (whilst Petrucci bars the upper frets and Satriani plays with the pick ups and volume swells)!
